MATE clock applet and notification area are too narrow

0

I am running Debian Buster with MATE 1.20.3 on a laptop with a 15.5 inch monitor at a resolution of 3840x2160. No matter what I set the DPI to in Appearance Preferences, the clock applet and the notification area are too narrow, so most content is not visible. For example, the clock reads "Thu Jan" with the rest cut off, even though I moved it so that it's not at the extreme right edge of the screen. Similarly, the notification area is only wide enough to hold one icon, so the keyboard layout icon, the network manager icon, and the volume control icon are all smushed together. How can I fix this?
