ガブリエル"ゲイブ"ウィッチャー(Gabriel "Gabe" Witcher, 06/11/1978-)はアメリカの多楽器奏者、プロデューサー、編曲者であるが、フィドル奏者、ボーカルとして最も有名。弦楽器バンド、パンチブラザーズの創設メンバーである。2014年にはパンチブラザーズのメンバーと共に、Affiliate Scholar of Oberlin Conservatoryに任命される。

歴史

ゲイブ・ウィッチャーの音楽活動は1984年、当時彼が6歳の頃にヨセミテのストロベリー・ミュージック・フェスで封切られた。彼はビル・モンローの手によって、ワークショップの群衆の中からステージに呼ばれ、モンローとデュオでの演奏に誘われる。ウィッチャーは彼の父に連れられてステージに上がり、3曲をステージ上で演奏した。これが、"The Witcher Brothers"の設立のきっかけであり、その後25年間アメリカ南西部で活動を続けることとなる。

1995年、ウィッチャーは、ブルーグラス、カントリーミュージシャンのハーブ・ペンダーソン（Herb Pedersen）の手によって"Laurel Canyon Ramblers"への加入を打診される。というのも元々フィドルを担当していたナショナル・フィドル・チャンピオンシップ3度優勝の実力派フィドル弾きバイロン・ベルリン（Byron Berline）がロサンゼルスからオクラホマに引っ越してしまったからである。ウィッチャーは四年の間フィドルを務め、二枚のアルバムへ参加した。

1999年ウィッチャーはベラ・フレックの "The Bluegrass Sessions: Tales from the Acoustic Planet, Vol. 2" に参加し、サム・ブッシュ、ジェリー・ダグラス、ブライアン・サットン、マーク・シャッツらと共にツアーを行った(スチュアート・ダンカンの代わりに参加)。 2002年には、ジェリー・ダグラスのバンドに加入し、2008年にパンチブラザーズを結成するまで、レギュラーメンバーとして在籍した。

2005年は、ケニー・ロギンスとジム・メッシーナと共に、ロギンス＆メッシーナで"Sittin' In Again"ツアーを行った。ツアー中はフィドルの他、マンドリン、ドブロ、パーカッション、歌を担当。

2010年、2週にわたりデイブ・ローリング・マシーンズのツアーに参加。メンバーはローリング、ギラン・ウェルチ、オールド・クロウ・メディスン・ショーのメンバー二人と、ウィッチャーであった。^[1]

2001年から2002年にわたり、Eve6 と Horrorscope でのツアーに参加し、ベース、バッキング・ボーカルを担当することで、マックス・コリンズがステージ上でより動けるようになった。また、2001年の映画"Out Cold"の楽曲"Anytime"での演奏を担当。

ウィッチャーは映画やテレビ番組の楽曲に度々参加している。例えば、アーロと少年、ハンガー・ゲーム、Inside Llewyn Davis、ブロークバック・マウンテン、カーズ、トイ・ストーリー、TRUE DETECTIVE、ベター・コール・ソウル、サン・オブ・アナーキーなどである。また、テレビ番組"ナッシュビル"と"TRUE DETECTIVE"のために、T・ボーン・バーネットと共に曲を製作。

ウィッチャーはグラミー賞に7度ノミネートされている。5回はパンチブラザーズとともにであり、2回はプロデューサーとしてである。2013年のブルーグラス・アルバム・オブ・ザ・イヤーに輝いた"Beat The Devil and Carry a Rail"、2015年のブルーグラス・アルバム・オブ・ザ・イヤーと2014年のIBMAでのアルバム・オブ・ザ・イヤーに輝いた、"Noam Pikelny Plays Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe"、この二枚のプロデューサーは彼が務めた。また、ポール・シモン、エリック・クラプトン、エルトン・ジョン、ベック、ウィール・ネルソン、ネイル・ダイアモンド、フィオナ・アップルなどのレコーディングにも参加している。

ウィッチャーは、エルトン・ジョン、クロノス・カルテット、パンチブラザーズ、リアノン・ギデンズ、ノース・カルフォルニア・シンフォニー、ザ・シークレット・シスターズ、ナッシュビル、TRUE DETECTIVEのために編曲を担当している。

生活

2013年9月15日、マリー・ファーバーと結婚。^[2]
