Counting lines in a txt file saves with spaces and filename

0

I am simply trying to find the number of lines in a file and saving that number in a text file

mC=$(wc -l file.txt)
echo "${mC}" >> count.txt

However the result is something like

<space><space><space>3423423 file.txt

Why is there spaces at start and why the filename is also storing.
