Postgresql won't run on Mac

How can this be? Up till now it's been working fine.
$ brew services start postgresql
Service `postgresql` already started, use `brew services restart postgresql` to restart.
$ psql
psql: could not connect to server: No such file or directory
Is the server running locally and accepting
connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?
How to fix that?
Version psql (PostgreSQL) 11.1
