SSH Auth still asks password

we have tried to configure a switch with ssh authentication. The passwordless authentication was successful. as part of the testing, we have tried to set to default the switch and loaded the same public key from same server as before using same username. it was like doing the same process over again. but the result is the remote switch now asks for password. The next thing we do is to use a new username then followed the same procedure and loaded the same ssh key and the ssh key authentication was successful. What couldd have been the problem? thanks in advance. The switch we were using is Allied telesis by the way. thank you so much
