Vim Powerline installation traceback error

After installing the Powerline plugin for Vim I'm running into the following error every time I open the terminal (macOS 10.4):

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/local/bin/powerline-daemon", line 175, in <module>
def safe_bytes(o, encoding=get_preferred_output_encoding()):
File "/usr/local/lib/python3.7/site-packages/powerline/lib/encoding.py", line 49, in get_preferred_output_encoding
or locale.getdefaultlocale()[1]
File "/usr/local/Cellar/python/3.7.2_1/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.7/lib/python3.7/locale.py", line 568, in getdefaultlocale
return _parse_localename(localename)
File "/usr/local/Cellar/python/3.7.2_1/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.7/lib/python3.7/locale.py", line 495, in _parse_localename
raise ValueError('unknown locale: %s' % localename)
ValueError: unknown locale: UTF-8
-bash: /usr/local/lib/python3.6/site-packages/powerline/bindings/bash/powerline.sh: No such file or directory

Where on the system might this error originate?
