How does `execve()` pass command line arguments to `main()`?

0

How does execve(path, argv, envp) pass the command-line arguments in argv array and the environment envp array to the main function of the executable file being executed?

Does it pass the address of argv and envp arrays or pass the values of the elements in the arrays?

I am asking these because I would like to know when main() modifies argv[0], if the modified value is visible only within main() or also outside it.

Thanks.
